Best of the Web

Periodically we compile a list of the best of what the Internet has to offer to teachers—be that in the classroom or just in daily life. The current edition focuses on resources for new teachers – whether they are student teachers or entering their first year as head teachers, everyone could use a little advice.

New Teacher Resources

Education World

Education World has an article on its website that lists advice from “sophomore” teachers – the ones that have survived their first years and are ready to counsel the next generation of first-time teachers.

Educational CyperPlayGround

This website provides a page with “Survival Resources for New Teachers” including classroom management and discipline tips and a summary of legal issues pertaining to educators.

New Teacher University

This site focuses entirely on advising new teachers. It provides teacher articles on subjects such as achieving teaching goals and earning respect and offers motivational workshops and conferences for educators.

Scholastic

Scholastic.com devotes a section of its teacher resources website to providing advice for new teachers, including a “New Teacher Helpline.”

TeachersFirst: Newbies

This website aims to provide support for any teacher, but they also have a 4-point plan with advice for new teachers, in addition to other resources. For example, they suggest a list of various first-day lesson plans to help a new teacher break the ice with his or her students and get the year started off right.

Teaching Heart

This website also provides resources for any teacher, but the section devoted specifically to new or student teachers is particularly helpful.

TeacherVision

TeacherVision provides articles with new teacher advice on a wide range of topics, including how to deal with social/emotional issues among students and how to organize the classroom in an effective manner.

U.S. Department of Education – What to Expect

On the Ed.gov website, there is an online book titled: What to Expect Your First Year of Teaching. An easy read with easy access, this resource is not to be overlooked.

U.S. Department of Education – Survival Guide

The Ed.gov website also provides a comprehensive “Survival Guide for New Teachers.” It includes tips for how to interact with parents and principals as well as a list of online resources.

WETA: Reading Rockets

Reading Rockets is a service of the television station, WETA, in Washington, D.C. that also has a First Year Teacher program. Their website provides great resources for any first-year teacher, whether or not they are participating in the program.
